Overview

MMI Ecuador has been one of the most popular destinations for our Medical Brigades.  Led by longtime MMI Ecuador National Director, Dr. Susana Logacho, teams have worked with Ecuadorians in the Amazon and Mountainous Regions.  We focus on Primary Care, Dental Care, and have even done Knee Replacements.  MMI’s Milagro Health Center focuses on the Agriculture community where much of the worlds produce is grown.

Climate:

hot and humid with rain possible every day.   The weather in Ecuador changes every day!

Terrain:

coastal plain (costa), inter-Andean central highlands (sierra), and flat to rolling eastern jungle (oriente)

Project Location

Arajuno is a jungle community in the Ecuadorian rainforest located on the Arajuno River about 5 hours from Quito.  Spanish is the second language for many living here.  The town is surrounded by many poor villages that do not have regular access to medical and dental care.  The people living here are not well informed about healthy eating or how to prevent illness. There is little knowledge about or the availability of safe drinking water so waterborne illnesses are common.  Part of the purpose of this MMI project is to train the local health care workers on these topics through the Integrated Health program.

A passport valid for 6 months beyond your intended stay is required.  A visa is not required.

Accommodations:

The first and last night will be spent at a basic hotel in in Quito.  The accommodations in Arajuno will be at a basic hotel. Rooms will be shared and each room will have a bathroom with hot water. There will be access to internet and telephones.

Clinic:

The team will travel to different communities each day by bus (average 25 – 45 minutes away). If the roads are too muddy the team will travel to the communities on the river using motorized canoes.   The MMI clinic will be set up in local schools or church buildings in the different communities.  We will work in partnership with the local government and churches and will have the support of local volunteers.   Our goal is to provide the following specialty services at the clinic: general medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, dermatology, internal medicine.
