We typically do about 20-25 surgeries a day. The first week we operate all day Monday-Friday and half a day on Saturday. Clinic The medical/dental team goes to a different village everyday and sets up a clinic usually in a school or a church. The village could be 15 minutes to one hour away.

Overview
The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean region on the island of Hispaniola. Hispaniola is divided into 2 sovereign states, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The Dominican Republic has been at the heart of MMI’s work since the founding of our ministry 40 years ago. Our first project ever was here in Puerto Plata. MMI’s first Health Clinic was established in Santo Domingo circa 1985. Through our one and two week projects many have been trained –carrying our work to many of the other countries where MMI is now located today. Graduates from the ophthalmology Residency program have returned to their countries where many continue to serve the poor both with MMI Health Clinics around the globe. Our vision for the future is that the work will not only continue to serve the poor in the DR, but also serve as a bridge for volunteers and leaders to ultimately serve those in need in poorer and needier countries.
Here’s some things you may need to know:

About Las Matas de Farfan:
Las Matas de Farfan is about 4 hours west of Santo Domingo and about 30 minutes east of Haiti.  Our project site is a Catholic Retreat Center which has small rooms for ladies and couples and a large dormitory for men.   There is a nice indoor dining area and an outdoor gazebo for gathering and visiting at night.  We are guests of the Evangelical Mennonite church in that community.  The weather will be hot with average high temperature of 86° F and average low temperature of 69° F.
Immunization Requirements:
No immunizations are required to enter the Dominican Republic. All routine immunizations should be up to date. Please check with your local health department, a travel physician or clinic or the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to see if they recommend anything for your trip.
