OVERVIEW:

The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean region on the island of Hispaniola. Hispaniola is divided into 2 sovereign states, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The Dominican Republic has been at the heart of MMI’s work since the founding of our ministry 40 years ago. Our first project ever was here in Puerto Plata. MMI’s first Health Clinic was established in Santo Domingo circa 1985. Through our one and two week projects many have been trained –carrying our work to many of the other countries where MMI is now located today. Graduates from the ophthalmology Residency program have returned to their countries where many continue to serve the poor both with MMI Health Clinics around the globe. Our vision for the future is that the work will not only continue to serve the poor in the DR, but also serve as a bridge for volunteers and leaders to ultimately serve those in need in poorer and needier countries.

Monte Plate has about 3500 residents. The town square is dominated by a large church. Other features in town include schools, stories and shops, small restaurants and an army barracks. The people are very friendly. Streets are narrow and dusty. The main roads are crowded with mixed traffic- trucks, cars, horses and mopeds. Many of the families keep chickens, pigs, or bees. At night, we are serenaded by roosters which are bred in an open building across the street from the mission.

Wouldn’t you like to continue the progress that was begun 40 decades ago and change the lives of the people in the Dominican Republic?
